Bann Disc

This image has been developed from a disc found in the 2nd Century A.D. It is decorated with the symbol of the ubiquitous triskeles which have magical significance. Triskele is a circular design where three curves radiate from a central point - it is preserved in the three legged motif of the Isle of Man. Three was a magic number - later Welsh poems were composed in groups of three (triads) and some deities were represented in groups of three. Although the exact original meaning of the symbolism is lost to us, it is clear by the sheer repetition of this design on various objects that Celtic art was not mere ornament but part of a belief system of Celtic society. It could indicate the cycle birth, life and death. The original disc would have been suspended from a chain which may have been part of priestly regalia.
